>> Three Years Ago
After a night of blood, pain, and agonizing loss, Susie had to wait until her husband returned that afternoon to tell him, âWe lost the baby.â Her voice was flat. She felt numb, like a person riding inside her own body, looking through her eyes, and yet apartâdead.
âLost, b-butââ Joe stuttered, blinking tears from his eyes. âHow? Yesterdayâ¦at my sisterâsâ¦you were fine. You said⦠Are you sure? We can see the midwife.â
Susie shook her head. âIt wonât help.â
âDear Gott!â Joe threw his arms around Susie. It was only when she felt the warmth of him that the grief swept over her, cracking the icy numbness that had held her, like a shield, through the night.
She almost hated him for it. With the warmth of her husbandâs arms melting her defenses, she had to live again.
âIâm so sorry,â Joe breathed into her hair. âI should have been here.â
âThis was Gottâs will,â Susie said. The words didnât comfort her. But maybe they would in time.
âI wonât leave you again,â Joe said.
âWe have to bury her,â Susie said. âOr him.â Her voice cracked. âThere wasnât⦠But I saved⦠We should bury our bobbeli by the tree next to the barn.â
âDo you want to talk to your mamm? I can go to her home.â
âShe didnât know. I wasnât going to tell anyone until after three months. No need to burden her now.â
âButââ
âNe,â Susie said. Her mamm was been so eager for grandchildren. The last thing Susie wanted to do was burden her with Susieâs failure.
Maybe if Salome hadnât run off, Susie would have confessed to her.
Susieâs eyes teared up. She missed Salome. It was worse than her wedding to Joe. Her baby was gone, and instead of thinking about her mamm or appreciating the love of her husband, she was reaching out for a friend who had abandoned her without a word.
How selfish was that?
