>> Three Years Ago

After a night of blood, pain, and agonizing loss, Susie had to wait until her husband returned that afternoon to tell him, “We lost the baby.” Her voice was flat. She felt numb, like a person riding inside her own body, looking through her eyes, and yet apart—dead.

“Lost, b-but—” Joe stuttered, blinking tears from his eyes. “How? Yesterday…at my sister’s…you were fine. You said… Are you sure? We can see the midwife.”

Susie shook her head. “It won’t help.”

“Dear Gott!” Joe threw his arms around Susie. It was only when she felt the warmth of him that the grief swept over her, cracking the icy numbness that had held her, like a shield, through the night.

She almost hated him for it. With the warmth of her husband’s arms melting her defenses, she had to live again.

“I’m so sorry,” Joe breathed into her hair. “I should have been here.”

“This was Gott’s will,” Susie said. The words didn’t comfort her. But maybe they would in time.

“I won’t leave you again,” Joe said.

“We have to bury her,” Susie said. “Or him.” Her voice cracked. “There wasn’t… But I saved… We should bury our bobbeli by the tree next to the barn.”

“Do you want to talk to your mamm? I can go to her home.”

“She didn’t know. I wasn’t going to tell anyone until after three months. No need to burden her now.”

“But—”

“Ne,” Susie said. Her mamm was been so eager for grandchildren. The last thing Susie wanted to do was burden her with Susie’s failure.

Maybe if Salome hadn’t run off, Susie would have confessed to her.

Susie’s eyes teared up. She missed Salome. It was worse than her wedding to Joe. Her baby was gone, and instead of thinking about her mamm or appreciating the love of her husband, she was reaching out for a friend who had abandoned her without a word.

How selfish was that?
